House meeting adjourned until Thursday
RSP lawmakers intensify obstruction over visit visa scam, prompting Speaker to adjourn session; calls for probe remain unmet.
Post Report
The House of Representatives meeting was adjourned on Tuesday, until 11 am on Thursday, as lawmakers from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) continued their obstruction, demanding an independent investigation into alleged irregularities in the ‘visit visa’ scam.
Speaker Devraj Ghimire issued a notice postponing the session after RSP lawmakers again surrounded the rostrum in protest. The parliamentary secretariat said the adjournment was intended to allow time for political parties to reach a consensus on resolving the ongoing deadlock.
RSP lawmakers have been disrupting House proceedings since May 27, calling for the resignation of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and the formation of either a parliamentary committee or a judicial commission to probe the alleged misuse of visit visas, a scandal the party claims is linked to organised human trafficking.
On Tuesday, lawmakers repeated their protest by occupying the well of the House, chanting slogans and demanding action. Their earlier symbolic blue ribbon protest—highlighting human trafficking concerns—had already sparked controversy, with the ruling Nepali Congress accusing them of breaching parliamentary decorum.
Speaker Ghimire, who had previously attempted to carry on with House business despite the protests, opted this time to suspend the meeting.
With the government’s fiscal agenda and several pending bills on hold, pressure is mounting on ruling and opposition parties to find a way forward.
