Parliament meeting adjourned until Thursday as opposition protest prolongs
House proceedings obstructed once more over lack of consensus on visit visa probe mechanism.
Post Report
The meeting of the House of Representatives was adjourned on Wednesday until 3 pm on Thursday, following continued obstruction by opposition parties over the visit visa controversy.
The session, earlier scheduled for 1 pm, was postponed to 3:15 pm. However, it could not proceed after lawmakers from opposition parties, including the Maoist Centre and the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) stood up from their seats and chanted slogans demanding action, effectively obstructing the proceedings.
Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire repeatedly urged the protesting lawmakers to take their seats, but the continued uproar forced him to call off the meeting.
Opposition parties have been disrupting House proceedings since May 27, calling for an investigation into the visit visa scandal. The opposition parties that had initially demanded the resignation of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak have now softened their stance. They have now called for the formation of a parliamentary or judicial committee to investigate the matter.
The prolonged deadlock stems from a lack of agreement among parties on how the investigation should proceed, with repeated attempts at dialogue failing to produce a breakthrough.
