Court extends Durga Prasai’s custody by four days over Tinkune protest
Kathmandu District Court approves continued investigation into controversial businessman’s role in March 28 incident.

The Kathmandu District Court has further extended the police custody of controversial medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai by four more days for investigation into his alleged role in inciting violence Tinkune protest on March 28.
A single bench of Judge Harka Bahadur Chhetri granted the extension on Sunday, approving a police request to continue holding Prasai and 26 others, according to court information officer Deepak Kumar Shrestha.
This follows a previous remand issued on May 13, which had given police five additional days to investigate.
Prasai faces charges including attempted murder, homicide, money laundering, and banking offences. He had been on the run after allegedly inciting violence during the March 28 pro-monarchy demonstration but was arrested in India on April 10 and brought to Kathmandu the next day via Bhadrapur.
The March 28 protest, led by the Joint People’s Movement Committee chaired by Panchayat-era leader Nabaraj Subedi, turned violent after Prasai allegedly instigated unrest.
The committee designated Prasai as ‘the field commander’ of the Tinkune protest.
The demonstration resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including a journalist, and extensive damage to both public and private property.
Dozens of vehicles were torched, and several buildings—including government offices—were set on fire during the protest.
Some of the protesters including Rastriya Prajatantra Party leaders Rabindra Mishra and Dhawal Shamsher Rana arrested after the incident were earlier released following court orders.
