Both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly on Sunday endorsed the government’s policies and programmes for the fiscal year 2025/26 by majority vote, following a week-long deliberation.
Speaker Devraj Ghimire and upper house chair Narayan Dahal announced the passage of the government’s policy document during the meetings in the respective chambers on Sunday.
President Ramchandra Paudel presented the policies and programmes at a joint meeting of the two chambers on May 2.
The finance minister will now prepare and unveil the government’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year on May 29.
After the presentation of the policies and programmes by the head of state earlier this month, lawmakers deliberated on the policy document and raised numerous questions on the proposed policies and plans.
In the final session on Sunday, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli addressed lawmakers’ concerns, defending the document as a forward-looking blueprint aimed at reforming Nepal’s development practices.
Lawmakers registered a total of 37 amendments but all were rejected during Sunday’s vote.
In his concluding remarks, Oli reiterated the government’s commitment to reprioritising infrastructure projects, enhancing intergovernmental collaboration, and completing ongoing works within the term of the current Parliament.
