Minister for Foreign Affairs Arzu Rana Deuba has said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has immediately taken diplomatic initiatives for a fair investigation on the death of a Nepali girl student at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneshwar, India, on Thursday.

Prisha Sah, who was studying in first year BTech computer science at the KIIT University, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha was found dead inside a college hostel at around 8:10 pm on Thursday.

“Immediately after the incident took place, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken diplomatic efforts through the Embassy of Nepal in Delhi, the government of India and the state government of Odisha to conduct a fair investigation of the incident,” Foreign Minister Deuba wrote on X on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, the state government of Odisha has said that the concerned authorities have immediately taken necessary initiatives to investigate the matter.

According to the Information and Public Relations Department of the Odisha state government, the parents of the girl were informed about the incident by the university authorities.

“On receipt of the information, senior officers including the Commissioners of Police and Revenue Commissioners rushed to the site to enquire into the circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident and take necessary action in the matter,” stated a press note issued by the department. “The forensic team is at the spot to collect evidence.”

Nepal’s Ambassador to India Shankar Sharma has said the embassy is closely coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs of India, the Odisha government, the police and the university for a thorough investigation.

The incident comes two-and-a-half months after the death of Prakriti Lamsal, another Nepali student, who was found dead in the same university. The Odisha State government had formed a team to investigate the death but its findings have yet to be made public. Prakriti had reportedly died by suicide on February 16, allegedly following torture by her own classmate.
