Teachers have been continuously protesting at Baneshwar for the past 27 days demanding a new education law.
Post Report
Opposition parties have registered an urgent motion of public importance in the federal parliament, demanding a comprehensive discussion on the ongoing agitations of teachers and doctors.
The motion, registered by lawmakers from five opposition parties– the CPN (Maoist Centre), Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), CPN (Unified Socialist), Rastriya Janamorcha and Aam Janata Party–draws attention to the failure to implement past agreements between the government and the Nepal Teachers’ Federation, which has led to widespread protests by educators from across the country.
The Nepal Teachers’ Federation, an umbrella body of the teachers, called for a nationwide strike at all public schools from April 2 and has been protesting in Kathmandu for the past 27 days.
The opposition lawmakers proposed a six-point agenda for parliamentary discussion. The agendas include the need to implement previous agreements signed with the teachers, improve the quality of public schools, ensure the uninterrupted operation of academic activities for millions of students and conduct examinations on schedule. Likewise, they have also emphasised enforcing the decisions made by the Medical Education Commission, and make health services more accessible and efficient.
Hitraj Pandey from the Maoist Centre, Santosh Pariyar from the RSP, Sher Bahadur Kunwar from the Unified Socialist, Chitra Bahadur KC from the Rastriya Janamorcha, and Prabhu Sah from the Aam Janata Party signed the document urging the government for swift action.
