The vehicular movement along the East-West Highway has been halted in East Nawalparasi after flood damaged the diversion built at Dumkibas on Saturday.
The vehicular movement along the Narayanghat-Butwal road of the highway has been halted within 24 hours after it resumed following repair of the road at Daunne.
The Daunne section of the highway, which had been blocked for 21 hours, reopened to one-way traffic on Friday afternoon. Travellers stranded since Thursday resumed their journeys after the partial reopening at around 2:15pm on Friday.
The Dumkibas diversion was constructed after a bridge over the Binayi River collapsed on January 10 this year after an excessively loaded lorry hit the bridge. Later, traffic resumed through the diversion.
According to the Chief District Officer of East-Nawalparasi Bhavishwar Pandey, the diversion was washed away due to heavy rainfall and that reconstruction would be started as soon as the water flow in the river decreases.
Officials at the Department of Roads and the local administration have requested people travelling on the Butwal-Narayanghat section to check the road condition and use alternative routes if needed.
