The ruling CPN-UML has strongly condemned the violent pro-monarchy protest that erupted in the Tinkune area of Kathmandu on Friday. In a statement released later in the evening, the party called for immediate legal action against those involved and demanded effective measures to restore peace and security.
“The CPN-UML stands firmly in defence of the democratic republic and the Constitution of Nepal,” said UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel in the statement. “We urge all political parties, civil society, and the general public to unite in support of democracy and against any attempts of regression.”
The party further condemned the violent and anarchic events, urging proper security arrangements.
“The party condemns the unruly behaviour, anarchy, and violence displayed by the pro-monarchy group in the Tinkune, Koteshwar, and Jadibuti areas of Kathmandu,” the party said. “Criminal activities, such as breaching security perimeters, attacking security personnel, seizing firearms, setting fire to private homes, businesses, media offices, political party offices, and government buildings, as well as looting, are completely unacceptable.”
Meanwhile, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) President Rajendra Lingden rejected his party’s involvement in the violence, asserting that RPP members were not involved in any violent acts during the protest. “Our demonstration was peaceful, and our people did not engage in any violent acts. An investigation should be conducted, and the truth will come out,” Lingden told Kantipur.
Lingden also called on the government to address the protesters' demands through dialogue and peaceful negotiations. “The government must engage in a political solution and address the protesters’ concerns through discussion, not repression,” he urged.
The protests in Tinkune turned violent when clashes broke out between protesters and security personnel. Two people, including a journalist, were killed, and dozens more were injured. Several private homes, party offices, and media houses were also attacked during the violence.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a stern warning to those involved in the protests, stressing that they will be held accountable for their actions.
A curfew remains in effect in the Baneshwar-Tinkune area and surrounding regions until 10pm tonight.
