Opposition parties on Wednesday obstructed the House of Representatives, demanding answers from Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli regarding the dismissal of Kulman Ghising as managing director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).

The session, originally scheduled for 11 am, began late, with opposition members immediately protesting. Parties, including the CPN (Maoist Centre), Rastriya Swatantra Party, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party, protested the Cabinet’s decision in the lower house.

Speaker Devraj Ghimire allowed CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Shakti Bahadur Basnet to speak. Basnet criticised the government for prioritising vested interests and middlemen over the country’s changing needs, and accusing the government of dismissing Ghising without justification.

Basnet demanded the government roll back its decision and called on the prime minister to provide an explanation. Following his remarks, opposition lawmakers resumed their protest, prompting Speaker Ghimire to adjourn the session for 30 minutes.

On Monday, the Cabinet removed Ghising from his post and replaced him with former managing director Hitendra Dev Shakya. The move has sparked political outcry and street protests, with not only opposition parties but also leaders from ruling parties voicing strong opposition to the government’s decision.
