Kulman Ghising moves Supreme Court against dismissal
Seeks top court’s intervention against his removal from NEA’s executive director post.
Post Report
Kulman Ghising, the immediate past managing director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court, claiming that his removal from the post was unlawful.
According to Nirajan Pandey, an information officer at the Supreme Court, Ghising’s petition was submitted on Wednesday evening around 5 pm. “The petition has been presented and is currently under review. After the review, it will proceed to the registration process on Thursday,” Pandey confirmed.
As the petition had not been registered by Wednesday, the case will not be heard on Thursday, as hearings must be scheduled a day in advance, officials said.
A Cabinet meeting on Monday dismissed Ghising, who had only four months remaining in his tenure, from his position as NEA’s executive director. He has been replaced by Hitendra Dev Shakya.
In response to the removal, opposition parties have raised concerns, with political leaders questioning the timing and legality of the dismissal. Ghising’s case has sparked further discussions regarding governance and transparency in public sector appointments.
Lawmakers obstructed meetings in the House of Representatives as well as the National Assembly. They demanded Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s explanation for Ghising’s removal. Demonstrations in support of Ghising also took place on Wednesday afternoon.
While opposition parties have been demanding the prime minister’s clarification on the matter, Oli, addressing a programme in Kathmandu on Wednesday, has urged them not to exaggerate the issue, describing the dismissal as a routine government activity carried out within the government’s jurisdiction.
