Post Report
Police have arrested Yogendra Rawal, one of the six individuals convicted of attacking Prem Chalaune, a sociology teacher at Tribhuvan University. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) apprehended Rawal in Kirtipur and sent him to Dillibazar Prison to serve his sentence.
CIB spokesperson Sudhir Raj Shahi stated that Rawal had been sentenced to two years in prison and fined Rs20,000 by the Kathmandu District Court, a verdict later upheld by the Patan High Court. Since Rawal was a fugitive, he was arrested and sent to prison.
On November 23, 2023, the Kathmandu District Court convicted six student leaders affiliated with the ruling Nepali Congress of assaulting Chalaune. A single bench of Judge Binod Khatiwada sentenced Hari Acharya, Rawal, Rupesh Sah, Nabin Kumar Lama, Niraj Ranamagar, and Sayuj Shrestha to two years in jail and fined them Rs20,000 each under Clause 192(5) of the Criminal Code.
The group brutally assaulted Chalaune on the university campus in Kirtipur on 6 October 2020, leaving him with severe injuries to his head, chest, and thighs. He spent a month in hospital. Despite the case being sub judice, the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government had attempted to withdraw the charges against the assailants, citing provocation by Chalaune. However, the Supreme Court later blocked the withdrawal.
Chalaune had been fighting for justice for three years, demanding action against the perpetrators. In March 2024, police also arrested Rabin Kumar Lama, another convicted assailant, from Tokha. The court had also ordered the convicted individuals to pay Rs2.8 million in compensation to Chalaune.
