A clash broke out between the 'No Cable Car' group and security forces in Taplejung on Thursday afternoon, resulting in 12 people being injured, including security personnel. The clash occurred as protesters, who have been opposing the Pathibhara cable car project, attempted to march towards the construction site. In response, Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force (APF) intervened, leading to the confrontation.
The security forces fired 7 rounds of tear gas at the protesting group to take the situation under control. According to Chief District Officer Netra Prasad Sharma, the injured included 11 security personnel, with one protester also sustaining injuries.
The ‘No Cable Car’ group has been protesting against the construction of the cable car in the Pathibhara region, citing concerns that the project would erase the area’s historical identity. The group, led by the Mukumulung joint struggle committee, has been organising phased protests under the banner of the ‘Mukumulung cable car cancellation struggle committee’.
Tensions persist in the region as authorities continue to secure the construction site, with additional police forces deployed to the area to prevent further unrest.
