A 35-year-old Nepali student from Nepalgunj has been found dead in the Guangxi Autonomous Region of China. According to the Nepali Embassy in Beijing, Sanjeev Singh, who arrived in China in 2019 to pursue an MD degree, was discovered dead in his dormitory at Guangxi Medical University on October 17.
Concerns grew after Singh was absent from classes for three to four consecutive days. Following requests from his Nepali and foreign classmates, authorities including police, dormitory supervisors, and professors forced entry into his room, where he was found hanging.
The embassy officials stated that the cause of death—whether suicide or otherwise—can only be confirmed once the final post-mortem report is available. There are suspicions that Singh had been struggling with mental pressure from his studies and family health issues, which may have led to the tragedy.
Having completed his MBBS in Chongqing, Singh was in Guangxi to pursue further studies. The high cost of repatriating his body to Nepal is a concern, and discussions are ongoing regarding arrangements once family members travel to China.
According to Singh’s sister, Smriti, the family is in the process of obtaining passports for his father or other relatives, and further decisions will be made once they arrive in China, as noted by Vice-Consular Sagar Marasini from the consulate in Guangxi.
