Government restructures committee to recommend officials for TJ commissions

The government has reformed the recommendation committee tasked with nominating officials for two key transitional justice bodies: the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons. The decision was finalised during a Cabinet meeting held on Friday.
According to Prithvi Subba Gurung, minister for communication and information technology, the restructured committee will be headed by former Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra, and its members include former Attorney General Khamba Bahadur Khati, Arjun Kumar Karki, and Stella Tamang. Earlier, top leaders of major political parties including Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chair KP Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN (Maoist Centre) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal agreed to expedite the remaining tasks related to transitional justice.
"The restructuring aligns with agreements reached among senior political leaders, including Prime Minister Oli, to conclude long-standing transitional justice issues," Gurung said.
Previously, a similar committee was formed in April but failed to function due to a lack of representation from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
This initiative comes as the two commissions face mounting pressure, with the TRC holding over 63,000 complaints and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons handling around 2,400 cases. Both commissions have been criticised for their inactivity since their inception in 2015.
