A courtesy meeting was held between National Assembly Chairman Narayan Prasad Dahal and Speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha Om Birla in Switzerland. The two leaders are currently in Geneva attending the 149th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
According to Dahal’s secretariat, the discussions focused on the bilateral relationship between Nepal and India, parliamentary cooperation, the exchange of experiences, and matters of mutual interest.
On the occasion, Dahal highlighted the deep connection between the two neighbouring countries, which extends beyond diplomatic and political levels to include a profound emotional bond between their people.
“Nepal and India have a historical relationship as good neighbours, and the emotional connection between the people has further strengthened the ties between our two countries,” he said.
Dahal also emphasised the formation of the Nepal-India Parliamentary Friendship Group by the Federal Parliament, underscoring the importance of regular exchanges and visits to strengthen mutual cooperation and share parliamentary practices. He noted that such exchanges help reinforce democratic values and enhance the bilateral relationship.
Speaker Birla, in turn, remarked that India and Nepal share not only geographical proximity but also historical ties and cultural heritage. He added that the strong bond between the two nations predates formal diplomatic relations, with close social and cultural links existing for centuries.
Birla also underscored the importance of increasing parliamentary visits and cooperation, citing geographical proximity as an advantage for frequent exchanges.
