A protest following the death of 17-year-old Nasib Chaudhary of Kanchanpur Belauri-2 turned violent as relatives hurled stones at Dhangadhi-based Nova Hospital on Saturday.
Police deployed nine rounds of tear gas shells to quell the unrest after relatives accused the hospital administration of negligence in Nasib's treatment leading to his death.
He was initially admitted to Nova Hospital on July 22 for treatment and was diagnosed with jaundice. However, later the hospital had urged the relatives to transfer him to a well-equipped hospital in Nepalgunj or India.
Chaudhary passed away en route to Nepalgunj at around 3.30 pm on Friday.
The relatives of the deceased accused the hospital administration of not informing them about the deteriorating condition of the patient in time. They also accused the hospital of delaying in releasing the patient asking for full payment before his discharge.
Ram Krishna Chaudhary, the maternal uncle of the teenager, claimed that Nasib would not have died had he been allowed to be transferred to other hospitals on time.
“First they did not allow us to take the patient to another hospital asking us to clear the dues, when they let us it was too late,” he said.
The deceased's relatives have refused to claim his body, demanding accountability from the hospital staff and compensation for the loss.
