A writ petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Monday demanding suspension of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane from his position.

The petition by advocate Anup Bhattarai also demands the annulment of the letter from the Office of the Attorney General that stated that there are no cases against Lamichhane in connection with the cooperative fraud.

A hearing on the case has been scheduled for Wednesday.

On May 22, the apex court directed its administration to register the petition.

At Lamichhane’s request, the OAG on May 7 issued a letter in favour of Lamichhane, who also chairs the Rastriya Swatantra Party. Advocate Bhattarai moved the top court to challenge the decision. However, the court administration had earlier refused to register the petition.

Bhattarai went to the court against the decision. After a hearing, a single bench of Justice Tek Prasad Dhungana directed the court administration to register the petition.

Bhattarai has demanded rulings from the top court to scrap the letter ‘which was issued without any legal basis’, direct the OAG not to issue such letters in the future and suspend Lamichhane from his position for the duration of the investigation on the cooperatives fraud.
