Congress to continue parliament obstruction until demands are addressed
The party will further toughen its stance in the days to come, says Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa.Post Report
The main opposition Nepali Congress on Saturday said that it would continue to obstruct house meetings until its demand for a parliamentary investigation into Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane for his alleged role in the cooperatives scam is met.
A meeting of the party’s present and past office-bearers decided to stay firm on the party’s demand accusing the leaders of the ruling parties of not creating a situation to run parliament by standing against the proposal to form a parliamentary committee.
The meeting has decided to convene a parliamentary party meeting on Monday to discuss how to move forward in the House, said NC General Secretary Gagan Thapa.
“Even yesterday we discussed options to end the parliamentary deadlock and address our demands with the Speaker and other parties,” Thapa said. However, the discussion yielded no result due to the government’s apathy and the Speaker’s lack of seriousness towards the situation despite showing maximum flexibility on the part of Congress, he said.
“That was unexpected for us. I think we’ve become more flexible than needed in our approach,” Thapa added.
“The recent activities prove that the government is adopting a strategy to neither let the house function nor address our demands.”
The main opposition party has reached the conclusion that the cooperative issue needs to be addressed seriously as the savings of the depositors were embezzled.
“We have no doubt that Lamichhane, along with Gitendra Babu Rai, embezzled billions of rupees worth of savings of depositors of multiple cooperatives. One need not visit many places in search of evidence. Simply visit government offices to collect them,” Thapa said.
The NC General Secretary further stated that the party would not budge from its stand and that it would further toughen its position in the days to come.
