The high-level commission formed to conduct a detailed investigation into the recent incidents of gold smuggling has sought suggestions on amendments to existing laws and structural reforms to curb smuggling.
A meeting of the committee held on Thursday decided to call for suggestions with a month's deadline.
Responding to journalists’ queries after the meeting, Dilli Raj Acharya, the chairman of the commission, said the meeting decided to seek suggestions from the general public and experts on the issues.
“Suggestions have been sought on how to amend the prevailing laws and carry out structural reforms to stop gold smuggling and modus operandi of gold smuggling and their multifaceted consequences,” said Acharya.
The government on Sunday formed a high-level commission to conduct a detailed investigation into the recent incidents of gold smuggling in the country.
The commission led by Acharya, a former High Court chief judge, was constituted after an agreement among the major parties over its jurisdiction.
Following the agreement, the commission has been entrusted with the responsibility of investigating the incidents of gold smuggling concealed inside electronic cigarettes and motorcycle brake shoes.
The body is also mandated to recommend changes in the existing laws and the investigation mechanism to control the smuggling of the precious metal. It is also mandated to study the investigation reports related to the smuggling cases and conduct further investigations if necessary.
The commission is given three months to complete its job.
