President Ramchandra Poudel on Saturday expressed his belief that only a fair, independent and strong press will strengthen democracy.
Amid a special ceremony at the President’s office, Paudel addressed journalists on the occasion of the Press Council Nepal’s 54th anniversary.
“Organisations, like the council, have been maintaining the credibility and dignity of journalism by upholding responsibilities like guarding freedom of press, setting codes of conduct, and monitoring their implementations,” said Paudel.
The President further stated that it was important for the council to carry out their responsibilities in a fair and unbiased manner so that questions cannot be raised on the dignity of journalism.
Paudel also opined that the press should also contribute to the development and prosperity of the nation.
During the programme, various journalists were also awarded for their contributions.
