Election for heads of parliamentary committees on Monday
A total of 12 committees—ten in the lower house and two joint committees with representatives from both houses—are without chairpersons.Post Report
Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire has scheduled elections for chairpersons of the committees of the House of Representatives for Monday.
As per the election schedule made public by the parliament secretariat on Thursday, candidacy can be filed from 11am to 4pm on Sunday.
The proposals for electing a member of the concerned committee of the House of Representatives should be registered in accordance with sub-rule (2) of rule 176 of the House of Representatives Rules seconded by another lawmaker.
A list of proposals registered within the set deadline will be published at 4:30pm on the same day, according to the Parliament Secretariat.
In the meeting of the relevant committee at 3pm on Monday, proposals will be tabled for a decision after they are presented by the proposer and seconded by another lawmaker.
Through the election, the parliamentary committees get their chairpersons over seven months after the first meeting of the House of Representatives.
The first meeting of the House of Representatives elected by the November 2022 vote was held on January 9 while the House committees were constituted on April 28. However, the committees, also called mini parliaments, are yet to get their leadership. This has adversely affected their performance.
Out of the 16 committees in the federal parliament, the four under the National Assembly have their chairs, but the remaining 12—ten in the lower house and two joint committees with representatives from both houses—are without heads.
