Police arrest two more in connection with Lalita Niwas scam

Police on Monday arrested two more suspects in connection with the Lalita Niwas land grab scam.
The Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police took Sanjay Kumar Maharjan and Sakulananda Maharjan into police custody allegedly for posing as fake tenants, said Senior Superintendent of Police Dinesh Acharya.
According to the police, the Maharjan duo were presented as fake tillers to transfer the ownership of the government land located at the Lalita Niwas area to individuals’ name.
Earlier on Sunday, former survey office employee Arun Kumar Shrestha was also arrested for his alleged involvement in measuring the government land and helping in transferring it to an individual’s name.
With this, a total of 21 people including former election commissioner Sudhir Kumar Shah and Bhatbhateni Supermarket owner Min Bahadur Gurung have so far been arrested in connection with the scam in which the government land was transferred in the names of individuals.
Lalita Niwas covers some 300 ropanis [around 15 hectares] of land at Baluwatar adjoining the prime minister’s official residence and Nepal Rastra Bank central office and some other residences of top government officials.
