The government has decided to issue an order to remove obstacles to extend the tenure of two transitional justice commissions till mid-January 2024.
A meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Tuesday decided to issue an order to remove the obstacles to extend the tenure of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons. The term of both these commissions was expiring in mid-July.
Minister of Communication and Information Technology Rekha Sharma, who is also the government’s spokesperson, said that the Cabinet meeting decided to issue an order to remove obstacles to extend the working procedures of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons until mid-January 2024.
Since it is impossible to bring the law related to the commissions through the parliament in the remaining period till mid-July, the government has decided to issue an order to remove the obstacles in order to extend the term of the commissions.
Section 42 of the Commission for the Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons and Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act 2014, authorises the Nepal government to remove difficulties. Such a decision, however, needs to be presented in Parliament within 30 days.
