CPN (Maoist Centre) chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal is travelling to India on Friday on a political visit.
At the invitation of the President of Bharatiya Janata Party, Jagat Prakash Nadda, the party chairman is travelling to New Delhi on Friday where he is expected to hold some high-level meetings, said Ramesh Malla, an aide to Dahal.
Dahal’s visit to the south is taking place two days after a high-level Chinese delegation wrapped up its Nepal visit.
Liu Jianchao, the head of the International Liaison Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, returned to Beijing on Wednesday night. The Chinese delegation, while in their stay in Kathmandu, paid courtesy calls on President Bidhya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.
The Chinese team also held talks with Maoist leaders including Dahal and CPN-UML leaders including chair KP Sharma Oli.
The Chinese delegation, according to multiple leaders who participated in the meetings, did not explicitly push for unity among the communist forces but wished they should come together.
Malla said that Dahal had received an invitation from Nadda to visit Delhi about a month ago.
“But because of political engagements, it took time. Now the chairman is free so he is going to Delhi. The visit will help build party-to-party relations between Maoist Center and BJP,” Malla told the Post. “Some high-level meetings are expected in Delhi.”
According to Malla, Dahal is expected to meet External Affairs Minister of India S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, among others.
“We are expecting a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi but it is not confirmed yet,” said Malla.
Dahal is scheduled to return home on Sunday.
Dahal’s trip to New Delhi is also taking place at a time when Nepal is set to announce general and provincial elections.
The Maoist Centre is a key coalition partner in the Sher Bahadur Deuba government.
Earlier in April, Prime Minister Deuba, during his official visit to India, had visited the BJP headquarters at the invitation of Nadda.
