Loktantrik Samajbadi submits 11-point demand before prime minister
The memorandum submission comes amid talks about party joining the government.Post Report
The Loktantrik Samajbadi Party on Tuesday submitted an 11-point charter of demands to Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba including resolving the citizenship issue and releasing of those arrested during the Madhes and Tharu movements.
A team of leaders led by party Chairperson Mahantha Thakur submitted the demands reminding Deuba of his past commitments.
The then Thakur-faction of the Janata Samajbadi Party had supported Deuba on July 18 last year during his vote of confidence.
“We submitted the memorandum and reminded the prime minister of his commitments to implement them,” Chanda Chaudhary, who was present while submitting the memorandum, told the Post. “He has said the issues related to citizenship will be resolved through amendments to the Citizenship Act very soon. He has also assured us of initiatives to address other demands as well.”
The release of Resham Chaudhary, a suspended member of the House of Representatives, amendments to the constitution and laws to delineate number of local units based on population and unveiling the investigation report on atrocities committed during the protests in the lead-up to the constitution promulgation are other demands of the party.
The party has also demanded government action to curb inflation and black marketeering and keep the marginalized communities in priority while distributing land to the landless.
Asked if her party will join the government if the demands are addressed, Chanda said, “No decision has been taken to this effect.”
“Every government makes commitments but they never implement them. Let’s hope the prime minister stands by his commitments,” she told the post.
The then Thakur-led faction of the Janata Samajbadi Party in June last year had joined the erstwhile KP Sharma Oli government after it issued an ordinance to amend the Citizenship Act.
The ordinance, however, was quashed by the Supreme Court.
After the Janata Samajbadi Party was handed to the Upendra Yadav group, the Thakur-led faction in August had formed Loktantrik Samajbadi Party.
