Chiribabu Maharjan has been re-elected the mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City.
Maharjan, a Nepali Congress candidate, defeated his closest rival Hari Krishna Byanjankar of the CPN-UML by 18,162 votes. Of the 86,540 votes cast in the metropolis, Maharjan secured 42,722 votes while Byanjankar garnered 24,560 votes.
Maharjan and Byanjankar were pitted against each other during the 2017 local elections too. Maharjan had defeated Byanjankar by 3,026 votes then.
In the battle for the post of deputy mayor, CPN-UML’s Manjali Shakya secured the victory with 25,084 votes. Shakya’s closest rival, CPN (Maoist Centre)’s Baburaj Bajracharya, a candidate from the ruling alliance, garnered 18,752 votes.
