These women brought home gold medals for Nepal but they’ve been all but forgotten
When Nepal won their eight gold medals in the first four editions of the South Asian Games, then called the South Asian Federation Games, none of the winners were women. It was only in the fifth edition of the games, held in 1991 in Sri Lanka, that Nepali women won two gold medals.
Paddlers Sijarin Shah and Gita Chhetri won Nepal’s first gold in the table tennis team event against India while Anita Shrestha won another in the 10-metre air rifle event in shooting.
Fit Box: Kathmandu’s go-to place for healthy eating
The need of the hour in Kathmandu is for eateries selling healthy food at affordable prices. Sensing a viable business opportunity in healthy lunch catering services, Denim Shrestha, founder of Fit Box, came up with the idea of providing subscription-based healthy meal packages in 2018. Shrestha who used to receive 30-40 orders daily in the initial days, has now started receiving orders from more than 150 subscribers per day on an average.
E-commerce platforms make profits but eschew responsibility
A lack of specific provisions in the law to address the roles and responsibilities of online marketplaces has meant that these companies are not accountable to anyone, despite making money as middle-men, say consumer rights activists. Sellers too are using the lack of governing laws to cheat customers through false advertising and price markups, they say.
With ruling party dynamics satisfied, the hunt begins for a new House Speaker
Now that Prime KP Sharma Oli and the ruling Nepal Communist Party have resolved most outstanding issues—like work division for the party co-chairs and the Cabinet reshuffle—one major issue remains—finding a new Speaker for the House of Representatives.
The Speaker’s post has remained vacant since early October, when Krishna Bahadur Mahara stepped down in the wake of rape allegations.
Province 2 tops in government job applications, but response from women remains poor
Province 2 has topped the chart when it comes to applicants for civil service jobs under the vacancy notice called by the Public Service Commission. However, when it comes to women applicants from Province 2, their share in terms of percentage points compared to men is the lowest in terms of total applications received from women compared to other provinces, according to a new report of the commission.
According to the commission’s Annual Report for 2018-19, it received 143,840 applications from across the country and of them 41,331 were from Province 2.
