The Ministry of Urban Development is preparing a design for the construction of a landfill site in Bancharedanda, Nuwakot, to ensure a permanent solution to the Valley’s waste management.
The December 3, 2018 meeting of the Council of Ministers decided to hand over the responsibility of the site’s construction to the Ministry.
According to the Ministry Spokesperson Krishna Prasad Dawadi, the Ministry has been working on designing the project.
At present, waste collected from 18 local units of the Valley is managed at Sisdole of Nuwakot. The new location chosen for the construction of the site is two kilometres away from Sisdole.
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City office had earlier refused to take the responsibility of the construction project, citing that its responsibility was only to collect and manage waste in a site prepared by the central government.
It was 12 years back that the metropolis had leased Sisdole for two years to use it as a landfill, but the site remains a place where the Valley’s waste gets disposed of. The residents of Sisdole have long been demanding the government to find a permanent solution to the Valley’s waste management problem.
It will take at least three years to complete the Bancharedanda project, officials said.
