The Special Court on Tuesday sentenced Dr Bhakta Man Shrestha, former executive director at BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital in Chitwan, to one year in prison after he was found guilty of illegally amassing property worth Rs11.86 million.
A joint bench of Judges Chairman Baburam Regmi, Ratna Bahadur Bagchand and Pramod Kumar Shrestha also slapped Dr Shrestha with a fine equivalent to the value of illegally amassed property besides confiscating such property, Registrar at the Special Court Bhim Kumar Shrestha told the Post.
The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had
filed the corruption case at the court against Dr Shrestha and his wife Shilu on February 14, 2016, charging them of accumulating Rs 16.75 million illegally. The court, however, gave a clean chit to his wife Shilu.
In 2010, Dr Shrestha had hit the headlines after he was abducted. He had bought his freedom after 19 days in captivity by paying ransom to his captors.
