Two teenagers—Samjhana Kumari Das, 18, and Sushmita Kumari Das, 15—daughters of Jadav Lal Das, were attacked with acid around midnight of September 12 while they were asleep at their home in Chandrapur Municipality in Rautahat.
Ram Babu Paswan, Das’sneighbour, was arrested six days after the incident from Kirtipur Hospital where the Das sisters have been admitted for treatment. They were brought to the hospital as the district hospital lacked resources and facilities for treatment.
Paswan had accompanied Jadav Lal to the Capital for the treatment of the victim duo.
Area Police Office, Chandanigahapur arrested Paswan from the hospital premises. However, the police have not informed about the arrest of Paswan. While Jadav Lal confirmed that the police have taken Paswan under their custody.
The acid attack on the two girls from Rautahat comes at a time when the entire country has been enraged over the rape and murder of 13-year-old Nirmala Pant of Kanchanpur, and the subsequent failure of law enforcement to find the culprits.
Doctors have already performed two surgeries on Samjhana. They told the Post that the 18-year-old is still in danger because of the health complications that start appearing later in burn cases.
Das, who came to Kirtipur with only Rs20,000, said he’s had to spend over Rs200,000 for the treatment. Two organisations have supported the family with Rs45,000, while a neighbour provided Rs50,000 as assistance. The rest of the expenses have been managed as loan.
