The flooded Karnali river has continued to erode its banks at Shahipur in Tikapur Municipality-5, Kailali.
To protect their homes and farms, the residents of Shahipur had built a bio-embankment along the river a few days ago, only to have it swept away by the flooded river.
“The floodwaters can enter Narayanpur, Satti and Dhansinpur villages any time,” said Lautan Tharu, the ward chairman of Tikapur-9. Every monsoon, the Karnali River inundates several settlements and farms in Tikapur Municipality.
An official of Rani Jamara Kulariya Irrigation Project said that a permanent embankment would be constructed in the area after the monsoon.
The project, which was launched in May, is constructing a 1km-long embankment to control flooding in Shahipur area.
The project has been constructing embankments in Karnali, Mohana and Patharaiya rivers in the
district.
