The government has decided to step up its work so as to graduate the country from the category of Least Developed Country (LDC) by 2021. A Cabinet meeting on Wednesday held deliberations on whether or not to graduate the country from the current status of LDC. 

The meeting concluded that Nepal has already met two of the three criteria set by United Nations and the third criterion will be met by 2021.

According to Human Rights and Education indices, Nepal is in a situation of graduating from LDC category. However, Nepal’s per capita income is not in a good position to graduate its status as a LDC must have gross national income (GNI) per capita of $1,200 for graduation.  However, as Nepal’s current GNI per capital stands at $800, said Minister Lal Babu Pandit.

All the Least Developed Countries will table their progress report in the upcoming meeting. In the meeting, Nepal will report about its plans to work to meet its standards.
