Former House Speaker and CPN-UML leader Subash Chandra Nembang has accused the current NC-led government of trying to undermine the people’s mandate.
He alleged that the government has been trying to prevent the elected represented from working as per the mandate in the grab of legal hurdles regarding National Assembly (NA) ordinance.
At a press meet in Damak, Jhapa on Sunday, leader Nembang urged Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to immediately pave the way for the formation of a new government. “It wouldn’t be appropriate to prevent the representatives from forming government raising unnecessary hurdles. PM Deuba should make way for the formation of new government as soon as possible,” he said.
He further charged that the government is delaying the ordinance on National Assembly election. He argued that the problem surfaced as the ordinance was introduced after the elections. “On top of that, the provision of single transferable voting (STV) system mentioned in the ordinance is unconstitutional,” he added.
The UML leader remarked that the government’s stubbornness in mentioning STV system, despite the constitutional provision of simple majority system, only shows the perturbation by election results. He alleged that the Nepali Congress tried to impose the provision against the constitution in order to increase its number in the upper house. He suggested the parties which accepted the election for the implementation of the new constitution to move forward by accepting the constitutional provisions.
Nembang noted that the government formation process, according to the new constitution, is different from the past. He said that the head of federal government should be appointed based on the advice of parties.
In a different context, Nembang said the process of unification between CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Centre) is in progress. He called on the people not to doubt the merger between the two parties as both have taken the election results with humility.
Nembang, who was elected to the House of Representatives from Ilam-2, thanked the voters and returned to Kathmandu on Sunday. Before heading to Capital, the UML leader assured the people that the development works will gain momentum in the constituency.
