According to Raju Budhathoki, chief of the examination department at the IoM, the arrestees were taking the test on behalf of original admit card holders.
Two persons were caught from Padma Kanya Campus, Bagbazaar; one examinee each was arrested from KIST College, Kamalpokhari; two from Brihaspati Vidya Sadan, Naxal; one from the Nepal Army Institute of Health Sciences, Sanobharyang; and two from Bagmati College, Sukedhara.
Budhathoki said three others were arrested from Arunima College, Bouddha, for using mobile phones and Bluetooth devices to find answer to questions. “An examinee was able to escape from Padma Kanya after coming to know about the arrests,” he said.
The Metropolitan Police Crime Division is probing six arrestees while the others are at local police units.
The IoM had conducted the entrance test at 17 centres, 13 of them inside Kathmandu Valley. Only the students who pass the test are eligible to apply for private medical colleges affiliated to the IoM.
Around 9,000 students had applied for the eligibility test. The medical wing of Tribhuvan University has been vigilant in recent years after students were found to have used latest technologies to either forge their admit card pictures while they also used Bluetooth connections inside the examination hall.
“We have taken support of local police units and other concerned agencies to curb such practices. The efforts are paying off,” said Dr Jagdish Agrawal, the IoM dean.
No items including watch and pen or pencil were allowed inside the exam hall. Pen to mark on the answer sheets was provided by the IoM.
