Rina Kumari Sah (Kabita) of CPN (Maoist Centre) has been elected as the first mayor of Province 2. She was elected from Maulapur Municipality of Rautahat district.
Sah mustered 3,912 votes while her contender Rabindra Patel of Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal (RJP-N) secured 2,208 votes.
A permanent resident of Bihar, India, Rina was married to Maoist Centre leader Prabhu Sah in 1999 and joined the decade-long Maoist insurgency.
Prabhu Sah is Minister for Urban Development in the current Sher Bahadur Deuba-led government.
Rina was active as the district committee member during the insurgency.
Patel was also active in the districts during the guerilla war. He joined the RJP-N after the party did not allocate ticket during the local level elections.
