Two women died and two others are feared dead in Wednesday’s night landslide at Lankuridanda of Bhimeshwor Municipality-9 in Dolakha district.
The landslide triggered by heavy rains swept away two houses in the settlement, killing Shanti Thami, 35, and Lati Thami, 79. Police said Shanti’s daughters Santoshi, 12, and Roshani, 10, are missing and feared dead in the incident.
The incident site is around 25 km south from Charikot, the district headquarters of Dolakha, and only accessible by foot, as motor route has been rendered impassable by rains.
Kiran Oli, a local ward member who was involved in the rescue, said Shanti’s body was recovered underneath the debris, nearly 500 metres down from where her house stood, while Lati’s body was found buried near her house.
Shanti’s husband, Mangale, said he survived as he had gone to the toilet when the landslide struck.
“I heard a loud bang while I was in the toilet. When I came out our house had been swept away by the landslide,” Mangale told the Post.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Rameshwor Karki, security personnel reached the incident site at around 8 am on Wednesday.
Search is underway for the missing children, he added.
The search is on to find the missing duo, said Karki.
Meanwhile, landslides have obstructed the Lamosanghu-Jiri road section that connects Dolakha with Kathmandu.
Landslides have also displaced over a dozen households in Dolakha.
