A majority of the resignations came from the new recruits in the mid-western region, followed by the central region.
The resignation, however, will have little impact on security arrangements for the June 20 vote, according to Senior Superintendent of Police Sarbendra Khanal.
“We already have a large pool of temporary police who will be deployed for the second-phase polls. Even while planning the hiring of temporary police, we had envisioned such voluntary retirement that the Myadis will seek,” said the Nepal Police spokesman.
Data from the police department show that 2,093 temporary recruits resigned from a total of 11,197 in the Mid West while 1,901 quit their temporary jobs from the central region. Deputy Inspector General of Police Bijaya Lal Kayastha, chief of the Mid-Western Regional Police Office, said many of the temporary personnel left for work in the fields and to collect Yarsagumba, the insect-herb used for medicinal purposes.
“Many farmers had enrolled themselves in the job, ahead of the rainy [plantation] season,” said DIG Kayastha.
Apart from those who quit, the NP has taken action against 185 recruits for “indiscipline”. Nine of them have lost lives.
The government on March 24 announced vacancies for 75,000 Myadi police for the May 14 elections. However, after the government decided to hold the polls in two phases, 22,602 of them were deployed in the first phase.
According to an integrated security plan of the Home Ministry, 39,980 police personnel will be deployed in the districts. They will be assisted by 48,896 temporary police and 26,250 Armed Police Force members. An additional 47,000 Army personnel will be deployed for the polls.
