Major party top brass reach agreement to resume Parliament
The CPN-UML on Monday agreed to allow the Legislature-Parliament to resume from Tuesday paving the way for holding a parliamentary voting to elect the new prime minister.
The top leaders of big three political parties have reached an agreement to resume the Legislature-Parliament meeting from Tuesday.
The agreement was reached in a meeting convened by House Speaker Onsari Gharti at her office in Singha Durbar, Kathmandu this evening, said CPN-UML Chief Whip Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal. The agreement has cleared the deck for holding a voting in the House to elect the new prime minister.
According to the agreement reached this evening, top leaders of the three political parties will address the first meeting of the House. The leaders of ruling Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Centre) will express commitment to conduct the second phase of local level polls, and elections of provincial assembly and federal assembly in a free and fair manner within the given timeframe. Then the CPN-UML leaders will address the House.
Likewise, the second meeting of the parliament will conduct the voting to elect the new prime minister. Top leaders of the parties except CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli were present at the meeting today.
The main opposition, CPN-UML, had been obstructing the House proceedings in protest against the Election Commission’s decision to conduct re-election in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-19 where ballot papers were torn up on May 28.
The agreement came on the heels of Supreme Court order to put on hold the election body’s decision to conduct re-election in the disputed ward of Bharatpur Metropolis.
The parliamentary vote scheduled to elect the new prime minister was deferred on Sunday after the main opposition warned of obstructing the House in protest against the EC’s decision.
