A Cabinet meeting on Monday had decided to amend the Local Level Election Act to allow the agitating RJPN enough time to provide names and signatures of party officials to the Election Commission (EC) for its participation in the second phase of local level elections which has been rescheduled for June 23.
The RJPN has long been demanding the government endorse the revised constitution amendment bill for their participation in the elections.
Earlier, the government had decided to hold the second phase of local polls on June 14.
There is a legal provision that the concerned political party should file its nomination with the candidate’s names signatures of the party officials at the EC 15 days before the deadline.
According to the Election Act, the provision has barred the RJPN to officially provide tickets to the candidates.
“There is no way that the RJPN which has not completed the process to file the party name at the EC provide such details,” Election Commission spokesperson Joint Secretary Surya Prasad Sharma said.
The RJPN was formed by unifying six Madhes-based parties.
None of the six parties have submitted signatures to the EC, Sharma said.
