Election Commission (EC) has decided to conduct voters' education programme in 6642 polling centres from May 11-13 regarding the electoral symbols.Election Commission (EC) has decided to conduct voters' education programme in 6642 polling centres from May 11-13 regarding the electoral symbols.
The EC will mobilise volunteers for the educating the voters who will demonstrate the proper way to stamp the ballot paper and fold it property before stuffing into the ballot box by using model ballot papers, according to the EC. The EC has planned to distribute voters' ID cards through the polling centres from May 11 for three days. When the voters arrive to receive their ID cards, they will be shown how to cast vote, the EC officials said.
The voter himself or herself or a family member of the voter should go to receive the ID cards as per the legal provision. "Through this method, we hope to reach every voter," said Nawaraj Dhakal, joint secretary of EC. "If not, we can educate most of the voters."
EC has said the people have a lot of confusion about ballot papers compared to other issues. The ballot papers are lager and a voter has to cast vote for seven posts in the local elections. Considering the existing confusion about voting, a meeting of the EC on Tuesday instructed the volunteers to attend the polling centres for three days compulsorily and provide information to the voters about the voting process.
The EC has mobilised one volunteer each for a polling centre to impart election related education.
Even National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Sunday expressed concerns over lack of voters' education. "Neither the EC nor the political parties have reached the inner villages to educate the people," said Anup Raj Sharma, chairperson of the NHRC.
