The EC has also asked the government to declare a public holiday in three provinces on the poll day on May 14.
As schools have to be prepared as polling centres for the first round of local polls, they needed to be shut down for a week, EC Spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma said, adding that it was the second time that the poll body had asked the government to notify the schools about the matter. Earlier, the government had instructed schools and colleges to across the country to shut classes when the elections were planned in a single phase on May 14.
