Gopal Parajuli on Sunday assumed the post of acting Chief Justice (CJ) of Supreme Court on Sunday after the incumbent CJ Sushila Karki was automatically suspended from the post following the registration of an impeachment motion against her at the Parliament.

Lawmakers from ruling coalition Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Centre) registered an impeachment motion against Karki accusing her of interfering with the executive and failing to deliver verdicts without being prejudiced, among other charges.

Talking to media persons briefly after assuming the post, acting CJ Parajuli vowed to uphold the constitution and follow the rule of law.

He remarked that impeachment motion against Karki was a sad incident.

Meanwhile, Progressive Legal Practitioners Association is preparing to stage a demonstration to protest the impeachment motion against Karki on Tuesday.
