A team of Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police on Sunday arrested Senior Superintendent of Police Shyam Khatri in connection with the 33-kg gold smuggling case.A team of Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police on Sunday arrested Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shyam Khatri in connection with the 33-kg gold smuggling case.
A highly placed source at the CIB confirmed about the arrest of SSP Khatri.
Likewise, the CIB is preparing to write a letter to the police headquarters seeking suspension of SSP Khatri.
The CIB on January 5 had seized 33kg gold, which had passed undetected through the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) customs. The CIB team had nabbed Gopal Bahadur Shahi, who had boarded an Air Arabia flight from the UAE. Shahi was caught after he had made his way out of the airport.
Later on January 18, Nepal Police summoned SSP Khatri, who was stationed at the TIA, to the headquarters as investigation into the high profile case has been intensified.
The case has raised questions over the security situation at the country’s only international airport.
The Customs Department has suspended six officials for “assisting the smugglers”.
