Six visually impaired students studying in grade nine in Purbanchal Gyan Chhachhu School in Dharan, Sunsari, are facing a hard time due to lack of Braille textbooks.

With examinations just two months away, they are worried about their preparations.

Rabin Jimi wondered how he would sit for the exam as he has not been able to prepare due to lack of Braille textbooks.

“I am struggling to understand lessons that are being taught in the class,” he said.

Amardeep Rai shared that he could score in the exam as he did not have Braille textbooks.

“We are depending on what we hear in the class,” he said, urging concerned authorities to do the needful to address the problems they are facing.

This year the government did not print Braille textbooks after the syllabus for class nine was changed.

Keshari Thapa, head teacher of the school, said all the students, including the visually impaired, of class nine are being taught according to the new syllabus.

Keshav Wagle, a Nepali teacher at the school, said he could understand the difficulties the visually impaired students were facing.  “Last year, the visually impaired students of grade eight had received Braille books only two months before their final examination,” he said.
