The change in local weather system is expected to cause moderate rains in western Nepal, with likely chances of a cold wave in the Tarai districts. “Light rain is likely to occur at many places in the western region and a few places in the central and eastern regions. Chances of light to moderate snowfall at some places of the high mountainous [are likely],” states the daily weather bulletin issued by the MFD on Saturday.
For a cold wave condition, the minimum temperature should drop a significant five degree Celsius. “Though there has been a gradual drop in temperatures since the onset of winter, cold wave condition has not been witnessed so far this year,” said Barun Poudel, a meteorologist at the MFD. There have, however, been foggy mornings and evenings particularly in the plains.
Over a year after the Gorkha earthquake, the delayed distribution of the private house rebuilding aid to thousands of earthquake-affected families has forced many to live in temporary shelters for a second winter. The cold weather condition with a drop in day temperatures is expected to affect people in Tarai districts over the next few days.
On Saturday, Jumla recorded the lowest minimum day temperature at 4 degrees, while Nepalgunj recorded the highest temperature at 28 degree Celsius. Kathmandu on Saturday recorded maximum and minimum temperatures at 20.6 and 6.6 degrees respectively.
Other meteorological stations including Dadeldhura, Dipayal, Birendranagar, Dang, Dhangadhi and Taplejung recorded the minimum day temperatures below 10 degrees on Saturday.
