Two medical teams from the Central Regional Health Directorate and the District Livestock Service Office have been mobilised at Mohammadpur and adjoining villages in Rautahat following a rabies scare caused by a spate of jackal attacks on locals and domestic animals earlier this month.

At least 50 people were bitten by jackals in Mohammadpur and nearby villages in the first week of October. One of the victims, Basanta Kumar Yadav, died during treatment at a Kathmandu-based hospital on Wednesday. Janardan Jha, the health assistant at Mohammadpur Health Post, said the teams will see if the people who were bitten by jackals are infected with rabies virus. People who consumed milk from the buffalo that was attacked by a jackal will also be tested, he added. (PR)
