An all-party meeting held yesterday decided to remove the former king's statue.
The security personnel intervened as the pro-monarchists and supporters of Hindu state erected the statue by hoodwinking the administration. Police had initially given permission to an organisation named Rastrabadi Yuwa to hoist the national flag in the area.
"They (pro-monarch supporters) had said that they would hoist the national flag at the chowk but they installed the statue. This created tension in the area and later the all-party meeting decided to remove the statue, according to which the police brought it down," said SP Tek Prasad Rai.
The police had tried to remove the statue yesterday itself which led to a clash with pro-monarch supporters including cadres of Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal and youths affiliated to Hindu outfit Shiva Sena. The police resorted to lathicharge twice to disperse the crowd.
"No one should carry out activities that give rise to conflict and hampers the peace and security," said SP Rai.
A life size statue of late king Birendra which occupied the place was raged by demonstrators during People’s Movement-II. Local political parties could not reach to a consensus over whose statue should be erected there.
