The major political parties have decided to mobilise their cadres at the local level in order to assist government officials in the reconstruction of people’s homes in the 14 worst earthquake affected districts.
The largest Nepali Congress and the ruling CPN-UML have issued circulars, directing their local units to support rebuilding activities.
The third largest UCPN (Maoist) is in consultation about mobilising its cadres. The party may take a decision at the ongoing meeting of its Standing Committee on Friday.
The NC on Thursday decided to deploy its cadres to assist the government in the rebuilding process. The main opposition said in a statement that its cadres would provide necessary support to engineers and technical staff, who have been deployed to speed up house reconstruction.
The government has been disbursing the first instalment of the rebuilding
grant to the people who need to reconstruct their houses.
“At least 20 cadres will work with engineers at the local level to speed up reconstruction activities,” read the NC statement.
UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai said the party has asked its local units to engage in the reconstruction campaign. “We have directed [the party’s] district committees to prepare an action plan on deployment of cadres,” Bhattarai said.
Soon after the devastating earthquake last year, the parties deployed their cadres to build temporary shelters for the survivors.
