At least seven persons have died and several others have fallen ill in the past two weeks due to flu, which has spread in Dhainkot VDC in Mugu district where temperatures have plummeted to below freezing.
According to villagers, flu has taken lives of seven persons, including a child, in the past 15 days. Six of the victims were aged between 38 and 65. Children and the elderly have been affected the most and are suffering from flu and cold.
Nanda Prasad Acharya of Dhainkot said that Kanna Singh Nepali, 38, of Dhainkot-1, Dharama Dutta Jaisi, 65, of Dhainkot-3, Sarjan Budha, 55, and Nana Jaisi, 52, of Dhainkot-4, and Sarpalal Malla, 65, of Dhainkot-9 died of the flu. Three-year-old daughter of Debichandra Jaisi of Dhainkot-4 also died of the disease.
Villagers complained that patients died for want of treatment, as there were neither health workers nor medicines in the local health post. The medical team arrived in the village only after locals informed the District Public Health Office (DPHO). Santosh Malla, in-charge at Dhainkot Health Post, however, claimed that the patients died because they did not come to the health post for treatment. “Those who died never visited the health post. They stayed at home and opted traditional treatment,” said Malla.
