Locals terrorised as cracks, craters appear in hills
Locals of Puktung, Kaseni-4 in the district have been terror struck as a hill spread over an area of one kilometre has started caving in, forming cracks in the surfaceMadhav Aryal
According to local Tilbir Bakabal Magar, after the rainy season this year, the tendency of the land caving in has increased significantly, endangering almost half of the settlement. Magar said that the huge landfall had put nine houses in Choyawas, Bhainsaritole, and Naadkhola in danger. VDC Secretary Rewati Gyawali, who had reached the site to take a first-hand account of the situation, expressed his bewilderment, stating that it was the first time he had seen such a huge crater in a hilly terrain. “It looks as if it was formed after an earthquake,” Gyawali said.
As human settlement is near the incident site and locals often take their livestock to graze in the area, Lokesh Suryabanshi, a local resident, said that over 60 domestic animals had gone missing after accidentally falling into the craters.
“We tried to rescue them using ropes and other means, but have not been able to rescue a single animal till date,” Lokesh said. According to him, rescue would be a major problem if a human falls into them as the craters are very large and wide.
While the phenomenon of hill caving in has been increasing in magnitude with each passing year, no one from the concerned government agencies has reached the site.
Stating that it takes almost six hours to reach the village from the VDC travelling through Gothadi, Jhadewa, and others, Magar appealed to the authorities to come up with an immediate solution to the problem. Meanwhile, a local NGO has taken representatives of various parties to the site. Following the field visit, the representatives pledged to take up the matter at the district level and identify, manage and seek a permanent solution to the problem.
